Accreditation:

Southeast’s recreation program is accredited by the National Recreation and Parks Association and by the American Association of Leisure/Recreation.

Overview:

Our recreation program’s comprehensive curriculum provides you the skills and experience necessary to allow you to promote leisure services that enhance individual, family and community wellness and quality of life. As a student in Southeast’s recreation program, you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge you gain in the classroom to real-world experience in the field. Our program offers you first-hand experience in the recreation field through participation in various campus programs, as well as agencies and organizations throughout Cape Girardeau. In addition, you will complete your educational experience with an extensive 12½ week, 500-hour internship in your area of recreation specialization. Our program has placed students in internships in almost every state and in many countries, providing them with varied and invaluable experience that they can rely on when searching for employment in the recreation field.

Some of our recent internship sites have included national parks in Alaska; resorts on the eastern seaboard such as Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Jacksonville, Fla.; camps in many states such as Colorado and Minnesota; military bases in Italy and North Carolina and therapeutic programs for various populations such as seniors, psychiatric patients, rehabilitation clients and at-risk youth in many locations, including Oregon and Georgia.

The beautiful natural areas in our region offer countless opportunities for outdoor pursuits. Our recreation students and faculty take full advantage of the excellent rock-climbing, spelunking, floating, camping, hiking, hunting, fishing and other recreational opportunities located within an easy traveling distance of the Southeast campus.
