Dance - BA
Overview:
Dance students at Southeast Missouri State University experience the intensity of ballet, the freedom of tap and the aesthetics of jazz and modern dance in facilities that provide spacious rooms for practice and an impressive performance venue. While studying dance, students discuss issues and theories relevant to their craft and use state-of-the-art practice facilities to learn the major styles of dance.
The dance studio, surpassed by none, has quality sound technology and a "sprung" floor, which minimizes strain on the body. It is flexible enough to provide classroom, performance and rehearsal space for student-choreographed productions. Adding to the dancer's specific needs the stage in the major performance hall also includes a "sprung " floor.
Dance students learn alongside students in theatre, music and art and dance in two major "dance-exclusive" shows per year in addition to musical theatre events. They find internships and professional experience are just part of the learning process, which dedicates approximately one-third of the curriculum to academic training, one-third to working with university productions, and one-third to career development.
The Departmen of Theatre and Dance is part of the Earl and Margie Holland School for the Visual and Performing Arts, located at Southeast Missouri State University's River Campus. The River Campus facilities provide a professional-caliber venue for music and theatre performances, including a 950-seat proscenium theatre, a 200-seat flexible theatre, a 200-seat music recital hall, dance studio, and state-of-the-art classrooms, studios and construction shops. The River Campus is a centerpiece for the arts in Southeast Missouri.
Requirements:
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in dance is a degree for students who wish to have an extensive education in dance as the main focus of their liberal arts education at Southeast. Many Bachelor of Arts graduates go on to pursue Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees.
All BA in dance majors must:
- have successfully completed one semester at Southeast as a theatre and dance major
- earn a grade of "C" or better in all courses that are major requirements
- maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher within the BA program and a minimum overall university 2.0 GPA
- have the prerequisite academic grades and apply for admission into the program at the beginning of the student's second semester as a major
- maintain requisite academic grades to advance in the program
