The Department of Chemistry has a long standing tradition of excellence in chemical education, and has been certified by the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Professional Training since 1968.
Overview:
Southeast's chemistry program is designed to prepare students for careers in chemistry and allied professions, and with eight different transcripted options leading to a bachelor’s degree in chemistry to choose from, students can more closely tailor their education to meet their professional goals. The B.S. in chemistry program has five options to choose from (chemistry, American Chemical Society Certified Chemistry, biochemistry, forensic chemistry, and business) and the B.A. in chemistry has three options to choose from (chemistry, forensic science, and DNA analysis).
Students interested in careers in forensic science should choose one of the forensics options. A recent survey of crime laboratory directors revealed that the majority of them prefer to hire applicants with a “hard” science degree, with a preference for chemistry degrees. Southeast's forensics options provide students with a degree in chemistry that also includes a strong foundation in forensics. The forensic chemistry and forensic science options include coursework recommended by the American Academy of Forensic Sciences for undergraduate forensic science degree programs. The DNA analysis option provides a basic understanding of forensic DNA analysis, and is patterned after the educational requirements used by the FBI for DNA examiners/analysts.
