Areas of Study

General Studies

Overview:

Southeast’s bachelor of general studies degree allows you to individually structure your degree program to fit your interests and goals, without requiring you to choose a major in a specific field. You can build a degree with your own area of focus and, unlike traditional majors, the bachelor of general studies program allows you to switch to another area of study with a minimum amount of additional course work.

Students may increase their focus on a particular discipline by completing an official minor along with the general studies degree, but selecting a minor is not required of students.

The general studies degree is available at the main campus, each regional campus and online – allowing maximum flexibility in completing your degree.

Requirements:

You will need a total of 120 credit hours to earn your bachelor of general studies degree. You must complete the 51 credit hours of required University Studies (general studies) courses.  You also must also complete a minimum of 69 additional degree hours to reach the 120 degree hours needed for graduation.  Your degree must contain at least 39 hours at the 300-500 (junior and senior) level.  At least 39 hours of your degree must be comprised of Southeast courses.  Electives can be in any subject area as long as you met the individual course prerequisites stated in the University Bulletin for each course you have selected.  Please note additionally that BGS students are limited to 30 hours under the Harrison College of Business.
