Accreditation:

Southeast’s dietetics program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Overview:

Dietetics is the high-tech science of applying food and nutrition to health.  The dietetics program at Southeast provides a curriculum that meets the knowledge and skills established by Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

The program will prepare you for acceptance into post-baccalaureate educational programs or to enter the work force in the expanding areas of food service management and/or nutrition-related careers.

As a dietetic student, you will receive hands-on experience and provide community service by giving nutrition education to senior citizens, delivering Meals-on-Wheels, participating in health fairs, working in university food service or rotating through local hospitals working side-by-side with registered dietitians.

Southeast’s dietetic internship program offers “real world” experience at various supervised practice sites located throughout southeast Missouri.  Experience at these sites will prepare you to be a registered dietitian.

Requirements:

Graduates of Southeast’s dietetics program obtain the knowledge and skills required of an entry-level dietitian.  Entering the profession of dietetics as a Registered Dietitian (RD) consists of successful completion of the following:

  1. A minimum of a bachelor's degree at a US regionally accredited university or college and course work approved by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
  2. Acceptance and completion of an ACEND-accredited supervised practice program at a healthcare facility, community agency or a foodservice corporation, or combined with undergraduate or graduate studies. Typically, a practice program will run six to twelve months in length.
  3. Pass a national examination administered by the Commission for Dietetic Registration (CDR).
  4. Complete continuing professional educational requirements to maintain registration
