The First Concert

May 25, 2009

Today we visited the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. We also stopped to see the pandas at the Beijing zoo. We then came back to the hotel now for an hour break before dinner and the concert at the Beijing conservatory.

The rest of our contingent arrived safely! We finished supper at the hotel and left for the Beijing Conservatory for our first concert of the tour. This concert was to be a full run-through of our entire China repertoire.

We played our first concert in China with great success! Due to some serious travel fatigue, we elected to abbreviate the program, cutting Bach's Sinfonia and Copland's Hoedown. Although our audience was quite small, we received excellent reviews for Fruehwald's 'River' and for Dr.'s Lim Judd and Christensen's performances of Mozart's Piano Concerto #23 and Vaughan Williams' 'Lark Ascending' respectively.

We're off to some well-needed rest and then to Tian'anmen Square and the Forbidden City tomorrow. Our guide has given us notice that while at Tian'anmen square, he cannot speak of the massacre that occurred there nearly 20 years ago as the Chinese government is cautious to prevent any student commemorations or demonstrations.
