CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Nov. 18, 2013 – Children interested in musical theatre will have a chance to learn new performance skills this winter through two youth musical theatre classes being offered at Southeast Missouri State University’s River Campus in conjunction with its production of “Peter Pan.”
Elementary and middle school students can register to participate in two classes: “Beginning Broadway: Peter Pan” or “Musical Theatre Experience: Peter Pan.” The classes are sponsored by the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Children involved in the classes will learn songs and scenes from the classical story “Peter Pan” and take workshops in acting, singing and dance. The classes will culminate in a final performance for family and friends.
“Our students will have the opportunity to have their classes and rehearsals side by side with the college students, which is a unique learning atmosphere that will give them the full experience of musical theatre,” said Victoria Tuttle, a professional teaching artist from Seattle, Wash., who will coordinate the classes.
Tuttle has taught acting and voice to young artists for more than a decade, and has directed dozens of youth productions and arts education programs.
Southeast students and cast members from the upcoming “Peter Pan” will assist Tuttle with the two classes. “Peter Pan” will premiere on Feb. 26 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. Performances run through March 2. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to perform at a pre-show at the 2 p.m. matinee presentation of “Peter Pan” on March 1.
“Beginning Broadway” will introduce students in first and second grades to theatre through Broadway songs and creative drama activities culminating in a final performance for family and friends. Acting exercises and games will encourage creativity and promote self-confidence and teamwork. This session, songs and scenes will revolve around the classic story of “Peter Pan.” All levels of experience are encouraged. Tuition is $90. The workshop will run from Jan. 14-March 4, with practices on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m. at Southeast’s River Campus. Space is limited.
The second class, “Musical Theatre Experience: Peter Pan,” is open to third to eighth graders who will sing, dance and act their way through the classic tale of “Peter Pan.” The class will be taught from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. over five Saturdays, Jan. 18 to Feb. 22. Participants will work closely with professional staff and cast members from Southeast’s production of “Peter Pan.” A final presentation for the class will take place at 1 p.m. on Feb. 22. Students are also invited to the matinee performance of Peter Pan, where they will perform pre-show. All levels of experience are encouraged. Tuition is $150. Space is limited.
