History: The Charles L. Hutson Horticulture Greenhouse was completed in 2004. The 11,000-ft2 greenhouse facility sits on a six-acre plot. Friends and relatives of the late Charles Hutson, owner and operator of Hutson’s Furniture Store in downtown Cape Girardeau, made significant contributions to help support construction costs of the new greenhouse. Also supporting the greenhouse construction project were members of the 150 Club.
Building Use: The Horticulture Greenhouse serves dual purposes. Students and faculty use the greenhouse for class projects and conducting agricultural experiments. These projects result in a variety of plants, which are either used to decorate offices around campus or sold to the public at competitive prices. The greenhouse benefits students interested in greenhouse management, landscape planting and design, turf-grass, and the burgeoning bio-engineering field.
Fun Fact: Southeast students, faculty and staff get 10% off any purchase with their student ID. Popular sales at the greenhouse include miniature roses, fall pansies and mums, Christmas cactus, poinsettias, and numerous house plants.
