The University Center

University Center

History: The University Center was added to Southeast’s campus due to rapid growth and expansion during the 1950s and 1960s.  In May of 1963, students voted to assess themselves an additional $5 fee to fund a new student union.  In 1969, a committee of students, faculty and staff began to put together all of the necessary groundwork for the building.  Construction began in the summer of 1973, and the facility was completed in 1975. The new union provided students with over 101,000 square feet of space, almost four times the size of the original union in Memorial Hall.

Building Use: The primary purpose of our University Center is to offer students a place to meet, work, study and much, much more.  The University Center has four floors.  The University Bookstore is located on the first floor.  The bookstore sells a wide variety of goods including Southeast apparel, snack foods, greeting cards, computer programs, school supplies and textbooks.  Students may charge their purchases to their student account if the total purchase is more than $10.

The University Center is the home to Student Auxiliary Services, the main University Center office, Dean of Students’ Office, Office of Judicial Affairs, Minority Student Programs, Learning Assistance Programs and Disability Support Services, Student Government, Student Activities Council,

On the third floor, the University Center houses a large student lounge, information office, convenience store and dining facilities.  The campus dining facilities in the University Center were renovated in 1999 to offer a retail food court environment including the Café Court and Skylight Terrace.  Café Court offers food selections from Casa Ortega, the Tuscan Oven, Players Grill and more.  Student meal plans may be used the Café Court and Skylight Terrace.

On the fourth floor, several meeting rooms, including small conference rooms to a 500 capacity ballroom, can be reserved by student organizations for a wide variety of programs, meetings or special events.

Fun Fact: The University Center originally housed a bowling alley on the second floor, but was eventually renovated into textbook services.  In the spring of 2004, textbook services moved into the bottom floor of Kent Library, and the space is currently the home for the Center for Student Involvement.
