The visual identity program plays an important role in shaping the institutional image of Southeast Missouri State University. The more consistently the graphic elements are used, the stronger the visual identity. The stronger the visual identity and use of consistent nomenclature, the greater the awareness and recognition of the University.
The most important principles in generating name recognition are consistency, frequency and repetition over time. Therefore, despite various preferences among our users, it is critical that the University and its units adopt a stronger, more consistent use of Southeast Missouri State University's official Word Mark and Logo, and that the University limits the number and type of variations used by its units.
The identity system also must be adapted to allow us to project one name, "Southeast Missouri State University," and when appropriate, to promote a unit or program name in close affiliation with the University name.
The identity system must be simplified to its most powerful and significant elements to help ensure proper consistency and use throughout the University.
First impressions that people form of Southeast Missouri State University are highly important and often lasting. These impressions are created through printed materials, electronic images and a myriad of other visual representations. It is vital that the visual representations of the University project a positive, unified image. The implementation of a policy in visual images, along with related policies and procedures, will help project a consistent image of the Institution.
These policies and procedures are in force for the production or procurement of the materials described. Policies and procedures are formulated without regard to source of funds or level of administration. Responsibility for budgeting and providing funds is derived from or assigned to units and organizations on a widely diversified basis and cannot serve as consideration in controlling University identity and image. Thus, it should be emphasized that availability of funds in individual unit's budgets does not constitute authority to proceed with the production of publications or printed matter outside of these policies and procedures.
All other forms of printed matter used in conjunction with the University's general operation whether for distribution on or off campus and/or without regard to level of organization, level of origin or level of funding, must bear, at the minimum, an acceptable variation of the University's name and symbols.
These policies and procedures, in and of themselves, will not mold the University's image, for these result from the actions of the University and its people. Nonetheless, it provides a foundation from which desired coherence can result. The focus of these policies and procedures is to establish consistency by which information is handled and the image is projected.
In a broad sense, these policies and procedures extend to include all forms of University identity, such as vehicles, signs, apparel and other applications of the University's name and symbols.
These policies and procedures are designed to provide guidance for users and to protect the interests of the University and all of its students, faculty and staff. These policies and procedures are meant to ensure that institutional images follow high standards befitting the University.
The Office of Public Services/Publications is responsible for all interpretation and control of institutional graphics. All requests for the production or procurement of these materials must have the prior approval of the Office of Public Services/Publications.
Other Institutional Images
No written policies or procedures can mold the University's image. It results not only from what is communicated, the medium of the particular communication, the location of the communication, the reason for the communication and the communicator himself/herself, but equally important, the manner and/or attitude with which the communication takes place.
One can only cite representative examples of contexts for portraying institutional images: signs, murals, apparel, etc. In the final analysis, these are just that- representative, not inclusive. These policies and procedures are effective only insofar as not only the letter, but also the spirit of these are considered. A positive, consistent image of Southeast Missouri State University can be nurtured from this foundation.
The quality of information published by the University plays an important role in maintaining the strong reputation and image of the University. These procedures and guidelines set minimal standards which are meant to ensure that information published electronically is visually appealing and well written and follows the same high standards as other forms of published information.
