Attention SEMO students! Have you ever wondered “is this really the right degree for me” or “what is it that I really want to do when I graduate college?” If you have, don’t worry. You are not alone. Many students experience anxiety or doubts along their academic pathway. According to Joyce Hunter, Career Linkages Experiential Learning Coordinator, she regularly encounters students who are unsure about their educational plans and whether their major is right for them or not. In fact, Joyce says, “it’s okay not to know what to do with a Criminal Justice degree,” for instance. Not everybody understands the various academic and career options related to their field of study without doing a little research first. Whether you need help choosing a major, exploring careers, gaining career-related experience, critiquing your resume, or developing job search skills, Joyce says, “Career Linkages is the ‘go-to’ place to help students understand the process,” and they are here to assist you in this phase of your life.
Career Linkages works to provide services and resources for all students and is a veritable gold mine of information. If you are looking for a full-time or part-time job on or off campus, Career Linkages can assist you with your preparation and search. Part of that preparation consists of writing a professional resume. Joyce further explains that Career Linkages works “as a facilitator to not just help write a resume, but helps explain what it’s all about.”
If you are looking for a great opportunity to connect your major with a career, then you don’t want to miss SEMO’s annual Career Fair. This past March was, in fact, the most successful job fair so far, with 75 employers and 300 students participating. This one day, campus-wide event, offers students of all majors a unique opportunity to streamline their job search efforts and find out what the future can hold for them. Students have the chance to meet with employers from vocations ranging from Business, Education, Health & Human Services, to Liberal Arts, Science, Math, and Technology. As a result, this one-stop recruiting event can expand your network for internships and post-secondary career opportunities. The information and advice students receive at this fair could make the difference between obtaining a “good” job or a “great” one!
Also, this year was the third year for SEMO’s Partnership of Prospects Career and Internship event – which is the targeted event designed to connect employers and students who wish to work in the greater Cape Girardeau region. Once again, students have the opportunity to prepare, network, interview, and succeed. This event is a valuable tool for students to gain first-hand information from Cape Girardeau’s top employers. These beneficial connections provide another important step along the pathway to success. If you are hesitant about attending either of these important events, think about it this way, as Joyce points out, “The worst thing that can happen is you will wind up with a decent resume and gain valuable experience with a local employer.”
So what do you have to lose? Don’t wait! Visit Career Linkages in the University Center, room 206, to explore their vast resources or contact Career Linkages at (573) 651-2583 or email@example.com.
Career Linkages is a valuable, free resource! Moreover, the staff is willing and ready to help in any way they can. Joyce states with heartfelt enthusiasm: “It is about empowering the individuals who seek our services. After all is said and done, it’s all about the students.”
