Units in the School of University Studies and Academic Information Services
The School of University Studies and Academic Information Services encompasses many units and programs that support you in achieving success at Southeast and gaining the well-rounded liberal education for which Southeast is nationally-recognized. Below find information on these programs and units.
Office of the Dean: Welcome to the Dean's Office. The Dean oversees operations in the various units and programs in the School. The University Studies program is within the Dean's Office which also manages the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies.University Studies Advising Center: The University Studies Advising Center (USAC) is designed for students who are exploring majors and careers, including those students who no longer want to pursue their current major. The Center works collaboratively with Learning Assistance Programs and Career Linkages to assist students with their academic and career goals.
Center for Scholarship in Teaching and Learning: The main faculty development office on campus, the CSTL is charged with promoting excellence in teaching, supporting effective teaching, and assisting faculty with pedagogic research and the use of instructional technology for the purpose of enhancing teaching. The center runs the Teaching Enhancement Workshop (TEW) for new faculty, oversees the administration of the IDEA Student Ratings of Instruction, provides workshops on enhancing teaching and learning, and supports instructional technology by delivering workshops, hosting instructional web servers, developing software, providing tech support and a faculty computer lab, and by equipment loans.
First-Year Experience: The First-Year Experience at Southeast Missouri State University offers many programs and services to assist you during your first-year at Southeast. Find information on orientation, the UI100 First-Year Seminar Course, the University Studies Program, and other people, places and programs that support you and help ensure that your transition to Southeast will be a smooth one.
Honors Program: Students who are interested in being part of an academic community that is committed to quality and excellence will want to participate in the Southeast Honors Program. Honors students at Southeast have unique opportunities that include enrolling in smaller Honors classes, learning from supportive and caring Honors faculty members who are excellent teachers as well as active scholars, and engaging in research and special projects under the guidance of the Honors faculty.
New Student Programs: New Student Programs is preparing for your arrival at one of our Southeast Orientation Programs. Southeast Online: Southeast Online is those courses and degree programs which are completely web-based can be completed online through Southeast Missouri State University. Instruction, assignments, class discussions--all facets of a high quality class-- are part of our online classes.
Testing Services: Testing Services is responsible for the coordination and administration of academic assessment and other testing programs available to Southeast students and community members. The Credit by Exam program allows students to receive university credit for knowledge gained outside the higher educational setting. Southeast also participates in national testing programs, either as a test center or as a source of information.
Writing Outcomes: Effective writing is an essential skill not only for the classroom but also for the workplace--in fact, it is one of the top three skills employers look for when hiring recent graduates. Through curriculum, support, and assessment, Southeast strives to produce successful academic and professional writers.
The Writing Center: Located in Room 412, Kent Library, Southeast’s Writing Center provides free, individualized assistance for all students, freshmen to graduate, who seek help with their writing in courses across the disciplines. The highly qualified staff of thirteen instructors will meet one-to-one with students on a walk-in or weekly-appointment basis, or students may submit drafts or questions via the Online Writing Lab, receiving a reply within 24 hours.
Writing Assessment: From placement testing for incoming first-year students through proficiency testing for graduates, the Writing Assessment Program provides feedback to the student and the university on the success of writing instruction at Southeast.
