Video

It has never been easier to share video content with the users of your Web site. Video cameras are relatively cheap and most computers come equipped with some basic video editing software. And now, with the dominance of YouTube, there is a free and reliable way to embed a video on your Web site.

Web Design & Support can help you set up a free YouTube account for your department or unit and show you how to embed videos from YouTube directly into your Web site. Here you can see some examples about how this works.

Embedding a Single Video

The folks behind the KRCU radio program Elliot Potter made this short video about the show and uploaded it to YouTube. Then they embedded it into the show’s Web page.

To embed a single video to your Web site, view the video’s page on YouTube and find the code marked “Embed” on the right side of the screen. Copy that code and then open your page in RedDot. Right click in the text editor and select "Source Code."

The page's HTML code will appear. Next, paste the embed code you copied from YouTube into a blank line of your code. Right click in the text area and select the "Standard View." You see will a box for the video. The box might look empty, but when you click "OK" to save the changes and close the text editor window the video will appear on the page.

Embedding a Playlist of Videos

When the Golden Eagles went to Scotland in the summer of 2008, they recorded and posted a lot of videos to YouTube. Web Design & Support put together a playlist of those videos and embedded the entire playlist to their Web siteso that users can watch one after the other from the same page.

Creating an embedded playlist like this is a bit more complex, so if you would like to use this option please contact Web Design & Support and we will help you get it set up.

Aside from being able to embed videos onto your department Web site, there are other benefits of having a channel on YouTube. Your videos are viewable by the sites millions of users, and it’s likely that someone who stumbles across one of your videos might follow the video back to your Web site for more information.
