Photo Formatting

Since a good photo can make a good impression on a visitor to your Web site, Web Design & Support makes it a priority to help provide you with high quality photography in a consistent and professional format.

We have a talented photographer on staff who you can work with to take new photos, and we also have a large collection of photography from around campus that you can browse. Additionally, we can work with photos that you already have and prepare them for your Web site as well.

Photo Location & Dimensions

Most pages with photos, like the one you are reading now, feature a main photo on the top and left side of the page. The photos are all 300 pixels wide and can be any height within reason to support vertical, horizontal, and square images.

Photos in the Main Content Area of the Page

The image below is a good example of how these photos should look.

Photo of students sitting on the steps of Academic Hall.
Notice that this image is centered in the page and also has a 1-pixel border. To learn more about inserting images into the main content area of your page, view the "Placing Pictures in the Center" Online Tutorial.

Some pages might have two vertical photos in the center of the page, next to or above and below one another. For consideration of users with lower resolution monitors, you cannot place more than two photos side by side with one another if your page also has a photo in the upper-left. For pages that are not using the standard photo template, you can have three photos side-by-side.

View the examples below:

The formatting above would likely stretch the window too far for users with lower resolutions and is not an acceptable formatting option for photos on your Web page.
Image of a page with two vertical images next to one another.
The formatting above is acceptable as it will not stretch the window of a user who is viewing the University standard (but still relatively low) resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels.

Note that when you have more than one vertical image in the main content area of your page (outside of the photo red dot area), every vertical image should be the same size.

Staff Photos

You can contact us and we will work with you to have our photographer take your staff photos at your department’s convenience.

You can also send us staff photos via E-mail or on CDs via campus mail if your staff members already have photos they would like to use on the Web site. Web Design & Support reserves the right to take another photo if we have any concerns about photos that are submitted to us.

If you submit photos, please name the image file according to the person in that image, or provide some way for us to tell who is who. Photos of people are uploaded into the system using that person’s name, and we will not upload an image of a staff member until we have their correct name.
