Southeast Grants & Scholarships for the 2010-2011 Academic Year

Southeast offers a variety of financial assistance programs based on specific award criteria.  Southeast students may receive:

Merit Scholarships


Merit scholarships are available to academically talented beginning freshmen and are awarded on the basis of high school achievement and/or scores on standardized tests.  The total of Southeast scholarship awards - including merit, endowed, sponsored and athletic—cannot exceed incidental and general fee charges.  If you complete and submit the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships by the posted early action consideration and scholarship deadlines, you will automatically be considered for the following merit scholarships. 

Governor’s Scholarship:  This is Southeast's most prestigious scholarship.  To be awarded this scholarship, complete the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than Dec. 15, be accepted to the University and meet one of the following criterion:

  1. Rank in the upper three percent of your high school class after six semesters AND have achieved a minimum ACT composite score of 31 or SAT score of 1360 (Missouri residents only); or
  2. Class valedictorian after six semesters AND have achieved either a minimum ACT composite score of 31 or SAT score of 1360 (out-of-state residents only).

The Governor’s Scholarship pays incidental fees, general fees and textbook rental for the equivalent of up to 30 hours per academic year (may include summer session) at Southeast and residence hall fees (fall and spring semesters only) in a standard, double-occupancy room with 15 meals per week. 

This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

Regents’ Scholarship:  This scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding academic achievement. To be awarded this scholarship, complete the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than December 15; be accepted to the University; and meet one of the following criteria:

  1. Recognized as a National Merit or National Achievement Semifinalist (Missouri or out-of-state residents); or
  2. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 27 or SAT score of 1210 and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 after six semesters or rank in the upper ten percent of your high school class after six semesters (Missouri residents only); or
  3. Class valedictorian or salutatorian after six semesters at a Missouri high school and have achieved a minimum ACT composite score of 25 or SAT score of 1140 (Missouri residents only); or
  4. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 28 or SAT score of 1240 AND have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 after six semesters or rank in the upper 10 percent of your high school class after six semesters (out-of-state residents only).

The Regents’ Scholarship pays incidental fees for the equivalent of up to 30 hours per academic year (may include summer session) at Southeast.

President's Plus Scholarship:  This is a $2,500 scholarship ($1,250 per semester) for Missouri residents only.  To be guaranteed this scholarship, you must complete the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than December 15; be accepted to the University; and meet the following criterion.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

  1. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 26 or SAT score of 1170;   
  2. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 after six semesters or rank in the upper 20 percent of your high school class after six semesters.

The President's Plus Scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

President’s Scholarship:  This is a $2,000 scholarship ($1,000 per semester) for Missouri residents only.  To be guaranteed this scholarship, you must complete the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than December 15; be accepted to the University; and meet one of the following criterion.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

  1. Recognized as a National Merit or National Achievement Commended; or
  2. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 27 or SAT score of 1210 AND have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 after six semesters; or
  3. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or SAT score of 1100 AND have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 after six semesters or rank in the upper 20 percent of your high school class after six semesters; or
  4. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 23 or SAT score of 1060 AND rank in the upper 10 percent of your high school class after six semesters; or
  5. Class valedictorian or salutatorian after six semesters at a Missouri high school AND have achieved a minimum ACT composite score of 23 or SAT score of 1060.

The President’s Scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

MAP Achievement Scholarship: The value is $217.90 per academic year.  This is the equivalent of textbook rental for five courses per semester (fall and spring semesters only).  To be guaranteed this scholarship, you must complete the Application for Admission/Involvement Scholarships no later than December 15; be accepted to the University; and meet the following criterion.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

  1. Proficient MAP score in 10th Grade Math or 11th Grade Communication Arts
  2. ACT Composite Score of 21 or higher
  3. 3.0 cumulative high school GPA or higher
  4. May not be combined with a Regents’ or Governor’s Scholarship

The MAP Achievement Scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  The graduating class of 2010 will be the final class to qualify for this scholarship.

University Scholarship:  This is a $2,500 scholarship ($1,250 per semester) for out-of-state residents and is designed to recognize a student's potential for academic achievement.  The scholarship value may change if it is combined with other Southeast awards.  To be guaranteed this scholarship, you must complete the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than December 15, be accepted to the University, meet Southeast on-campus residency requirements or have received a housing release and meet one of the following criterion.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

  1. Be recognized as a National Merit or National Achievement Commended; or 
  2. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 27 or SAT score of 1210 AND have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 after six semesters; or
  3. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or SAT score of 1100 AND have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 after six semesters or rank in the upper 20 percent of your high school class after six semesters.

This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.5 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria. Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

Regional Achievement Award: RAA recipients will pay the in-state incidental fee rate plus 10 percent of that rate for up to 32 credit hours per academic year. The approximate FY10 value of the award is $4080 (based on 30 credit hours). It may be combined with a partial University Scholarship or Community College Scholarship for an additional $1,500 incidental fee scholarship per year. Southeast's early consideration and scholarship guarantee deadline is December 15.  Applicants will continue to be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis until June 1.  To be eligible for this scholarship, you must reside within one of the designated counties in Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky and Tennessee and meet the following criteria:

  1. Achieve a minimum ACT composite score of 21 or SAT score of 990;
  2. Achieve a high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher;
  3. Live in university approved housing during the fall and spring semesters of your first two years enrolled at Southeast; and
  4. Be enrolled in at least 12 Southeast hours for the fall and spring semesters.

Eligible states and counties include:
Arkansas-Clay, Craighead, Crittenden, Greene, Mississippi and Randolph.

This scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years, 128 credit hours (including transfer) or completion of the coursework for a Bachelor's degree, whichever occurs first.  You must also maintain a minimum 2.75 cumulative Southeast grade point average and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.  Calculate your GPA to determine if you need to enroll in summer classes.

Southeast Family Achievement Award: This scholarship is available to out-of-state students who are the children or grandchildren of a Southeast graduate. SFAA recipients will pay the in-state incidental fee rate plus 10 percent of that rate for up to 32 credit hours per academic year. The approximate FY10 value of the award is $4080 (based on 30 credit hours). It may be combined with a partial University Scholarship or a Community College Scholarship for an additional $1,500 incidental fee scholarship per year. It may not be combined with the Regional Achievement Award. Southeast's early consideration and scholarship guarantee deadline is December 15.  Applicants will continue to be considered on a first-come, first-serve basis until June 1.  To be considered for this scholarship, list the name of a parent or grandparent who has graduated from Southeast on the application for admission. Southeast will verify the graduation of the relative and make the award upon admission to the University to students who meet the following criteria:

  2. Achieve a high school cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher;
  3. Live in university approved housing during the fall and spring semesters of your first two years enrolled at Southeast; and

G.E.D. Scholarship: Southeast Missouri State University offers 20 G.E.D. scholarships to entering freshmen who are non-traditional students, have not attended any other college or university, and have completed their G.E.D. program and achieved a combined standard score of 3,000 or above (300 if test taken prior to Jan. 1, 2002). Scholarships are awarded to applicants with the highest scores.

The G.E.D. Scholarship pays incidental fees for the equivalent of up to 30 hours per academic year (may include summer session) at Southeast.

To be considered for the G.E.D. Scholarship, applicant must be accepted for admission to Southeast Missouri State University, be enrolled as a full-time student, and supply a copy of the official G.E.D. score report with application. This scholarship is renewable with the completion of 30 credit hours per year and a 3.5 cumulative GPA.  G.E.D. Scholarship application

Student Involvement Scholarships


The following scholarships are available to beginning freshmen with a record of school and/or community involvement in high school.  To be considered, complete the online Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships.   

Missouri and Foundation Leadership Awards These are renewable $500 awards ($250 per semester) for Missouri residents, $1,000 awards ($500 per semester) when combined with the President's or President's Plus Scholarship, and $1,000 awards ($500 per semester) for out-of-state residents.  These awards must be applied toward residence hall fees.  To receive either of these awards, you must complete the scholarship section of the online Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships , be accepted to the University, and meet ALL of the following criteria: 

  1. Have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 after six semesters;
  2. Demonstrate involvement in co-curricular/extra-curricular activities, including honors, awards, community service, work and/or family activities;
  3. Maintain full-time enrollment status; and
  4. Live in the University's residence halls.

The award guarantee deadline is Dec. 15.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

The Missouri Leadership Award may be combined with the President's or President's Plus Scholarships.

The Foundation Leadership Award may be combined with ONE of the following merit scholarships: University Scholarship ($1,500 maximum), the Regional Achievement Award or the Southeast Family Achievement Award.

To renew a Leadership Award, you must continue to reside in the residence halls, maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 24 credit hours per academic year at Southeast. Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.   

Missouri Girl's State and Boy's State Citizens Awards:  This is a $300 (one-time) award for Missouri residents and must be applied toward general fees.  To be guaranteed this award, complete and submit the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships no later than Dec. 15, be accepted to the University, have attended either the American Legion, Missouri Girl’s or Missouri Boy’s State, have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average after six semesters, live on campus or with parents and be a beginning freshman at Southeast.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

Renaissance Scholarship:  This scholarship is for Missouri residents with demonstrated leadership and academic abilities.  The award ranges from $500 ($250 per semester) to $1,000 ($500 per semester).  The Renaissance Scholarship is applied toward your residence hall fees and is competitive.  To qualify, complete and submit the Application for Admission and Merit/Involvement Scholarships , be accepted to the University and meet the following criteria:

  1. Have the recommendation of a Renaissance sponsor;
  2. Be a resident of the state of Missouri;
  3. Maintain full-time enrollment;
  4. Live in the University's residence halls; and
  5. Not have been awarded a merit scholarship.

The award guarantee deadline is December 15.  If funds are available, qualified applicants will be considered until March 1.

The Renaissance Scholarship is renewable each year up to a maximum of four consecutive academic years.  To renew, you must maintain a 3.25 cumulative grade point average in courses taken at Southeast and complete a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year at Southeast.  Southeast summer hours taken in the same academic year may be used to meet renewal criteria.

Community College Transfer Scholarships
Southeast offers:

Transfer scholarship eligibility is based on course work attempted/completed after high school graduation.

Outstanding Community College Student Scholarship
Value: $3,000, renewable for a second year with a 3.5 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.

Eligibility: Community College Presidents in the Southeast Missouri State University service region may nominate two students. Contact your community college’s financial aid office to determine your school’s eligibility. This award may not be combined with the Community College or Phi Theta Kappa Scholarships.

Regional Achievement Award

Eligibility: Complete an Associates degree with a cumulative GPA of 2.75 or higher OR complete 24 transferable credit hours with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 AND live in university residence halls during the first fall and spring semesters of enrollment at Southeast and complete the University’s residency requirement. The Regional Achievement Award may be combined with the Community College award (maximum value of $1500) and the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship ($500).

To Apply: Applicants for Admission transferring from a community college are automatically considered for this award. No separate application is required.

Deadlines: Fall semester deadline is June 1; Spring semester deadline is Nov. 1.

Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship
Value: $500 (maximum of 25 awarded), renewable for a second year with a 3.50 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.

Eligibility: Be a member of Phi Theta Kappa and have a cumulative 3.50 GPA and 24 or more transferable hours (may be combined with the Community College Scholarship).

To Apply: send a photocopy of your Phi Theta Kappa membership card or certificate, or submit a letter of recommendation from the Phi Theta Kappa faculty advisor.

Deadlines: Fall semester deadline is June 1; Spring semester deadline is Nov. 1.

Southeast Family Achievement Award: This scholarship is available to out-of-state students transferring from a community college who are the children or grandchildren of a Southeast graduate. SFAA recipients will pay the in-state incidental fee rate plus 10 percent of that rate for up to 32 credit hours per academic year. The approximate FY10 value of the award is $4080 (based on 30 credit hours). This award is renewable (up to a maximum of 128 credit hours) with a 2.75 cumulative Southeast grade point average and 24 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.

The Southeast Family Achievement Award may be combined with the Community College award (maximum value of $1500) and the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship ($500). It may not be combined with the Regional Achievement Award. To be considered for this scholarship, list the name of a parent or grandparent who has graduated from Southeast on the application for admission. Southeast will verify the graduation of the relative and make the award upon admission to the University to transfer students who meet the following criteria:

  1. Earn an Associates Degree with a 2.75 of higher GPA;
  2. Complete 24 transferable credit hours with a 3.0 cumulative grade point average or higher;
  3. Live in university approved housing for the first fall and spring semesters you are enrolled at Southeast and complete the University's residence requirements; and
  4. Be enrolled in at least 12 Southeast hours for the fall and spring semesters.

Deadlines: Fall semester deadline is June 1; Spring semester deadline is Nov. 1.

Community College Scholarship      
The Community College Scholarship is awarded to students who have earned 24 or more transferable credit hours and 3.50 cumulative GPA at a value of $1500 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents); or to students who have earned 24 or more transferable credit hours and a 3.75 cumulative GPA at a value of $2000 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents);  or to recipients of an Associate’s Degree with a 3.25 cumulative GPA at a value of $1500 (Missouri residents)/ $2500 (Out-of State residents). Renewable for a second year with a 3.50 Southeast cumulative grade point average and 30 Southeast hours completed during the academic year.

To Apply: Applicants for Admission transferring from a community college are automatically considered for this award. No separate application is required.

Deadlines: Fall semester deadline is June 1; Spring semester deadline is Nov. 1.

Participation Scholarships


Participation scholarships are awarded by individual academic departments based on your interests, abilities and participation.  Because availability, application procedures, and eligibility requirements vary by scholarship and department, contact the department of individual interest.  The following are just a few of the participation scholarships offered at Southeast.      

School of Visual and Performing Arts: Available to beginning freshmen with a 21 ACT and 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. after six semesters and to community college transfer students with 24 transferable hours and 3.0 cumulative G.P.A. Additional criteria include:

  1. major or minor in art, theatre or dance; or in the case of performance areas, pursue active participation as defined by the department;
  2. demonstrate artistic promise judged by the awarding department.

Deadline is March 1. Renewal criteria: 3.0 Southeast G.P.A., completion of 30 hours per academic year and approval of academic department chairperson. 

Air Force ROTC:  This is a four-year scholarship that pays the cost of all incidental and general fees, a room in University housing, and a $250 to $400 monthly stipend tax free (depending on your class year).  The application must be completed online at http://www.afrotc.com/ no earlier than the summer prior to your senior year of high school and no later than Dec. 1 of your senior year.  You must compete with other ROTC cadets nationwide to be awarded this scholarship.  For further information, contact Air Force ROTC at Southeast Missouri State University at (573) 651-2184.

Communication Award:  If you have excellent academic credentials and demonstrated excellence in public speaking and competitive debate, you should contact the Department of Communication at (573) 651-2061.

Golden Eagles Marching Band Stipend:  This is a $500 to $1,000 award for members of the Golden Eagles Marching Band.  For further information, contact the director of University Bands at (573) 651-2334 or (573) 651-2335.

Music Scholarship:  This scholarship is awarded to music majors and minors on a competitive basis by audition.  You may receive a music service award regardless of your discipline if you qualify by auditioning for membership in departmental performing ensembles.  For further information, contact the Department of Music at (573) 651-2335 or (573) 651-2334.

National Guard:  This award is available for ten active members of the Missouri National Guard (Air or Army).  To be considered, you must be in good standing and in an enlistment period that covers the entire year of the award.  Undergraduate applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and graduate applicants must have a 3.25 GPA.  You must type/print the commander’s name, grade and the unit’s address and your National Guard commander must sign and date your application to certify that you are an active member of the commander’s unit.  To be considered for continued yearly awards, you must complete a separate application available online or in Student Financial Services each year no later than July 1.

Theatre and Dance Scholarships and Assistantships:  There are numerous scholarships and assistantships available.  Contact the Department of Theater and Dance, Dr. Kenn Stilson at (573) 986-6818 or kstilson@semo.edu for audition/interview appointment.

Minority Mentor Program


This program provides minimum compensation of $1,500 annually for participation in a work/mentor program. The award is renewable for a second year upon mutual agreement of both the student and participating department. Minority students with an ACT score of 21 or above, a minimum high school GPA of 3.0, demonstrated performance in academic and extracurricular or co-curricular activities are invited to apply. To be considered for this program, submit the Minority Mentor Program Application which is required and available online or through the Southeast Admissions Office at (573) 651-2590.

Fee Waivers


Missouri Income Tax Credit: The Missouri Income Tax Credit is available to out-of-state students who work or whose parents work in Missouri and pay Missouri income tax.  All or a portion of the Missouri income tax paid may be used as a credit against the difference between in-state and out-of-state fees. Some scholarships awarded by Southeast cannot be combined with the Missouri Income Tax Credit.  The Missouri Income Tax Credit Application is available from Student Financial Services. Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP):  The Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP) is offered through the Midwest Higher Education Compact (MHEC). To learn more, visit http://www.mhec.org/. Participating states include Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakotaand Wisconsin. Although the Midwestern Higher Education Compact is composed of eleven Midwestern states, the MSEP is a voluntary program and only seven of the eleven states participate.  Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and Ohio do not participate in MSEP at this time.  As a participating university, Southeast Missouri State University offers out-of-state students from an MSEP state the option to enroll at 150 percent of the in-state incidental fee rate. MSEP students must have a 21 or higher composite ACT and 3.0 GPA or higher to receive the award. Participation is limited to 100 students.

Southeast A+ Scholarship


Southeast A+ Scholarship: The Southeast A+ Scholarship is a University-sponsored scholarship. The scholarship requirements and renewal criteria closely relate to those in place for the Missouri A+ Program. The Southeast A+ Scholarship only covers eligible majors. Those majors include: 

1. Associate of Applied Science/Computer Technology with options in:
  1. Automated Manufacturing
  2. Microcomputer Systems
  3. Technical Computer

2. Associate of Applied Science/Child Care and Guidance

The Southeast A+ Scholarship covers:

  • Incidental and general fees for courses that are part of an eligible program.
  • Student is responsible for all other charges (textbooks, course fees, room and board, bookstore, parking decal, etc.) and for making payments by the scheduled due dates.
  • By participating in the Southeast A+ Scholarship Program, the student relinquishes any other University-based merit scholarship(s) intended for incidental and/or general fees. A student may ask to be reconsidered for University-based merit scholarships at a later date, if renewal criteria are met.
  • The Southeast A+ Scholarship is authorized to cover incidental and general fees, less any Federal Pell Grant award (including Academic Competitiveness Grants), Access Missouri Grant, and/or other awards specifically denoted for incidental and/or general fees.

MOST (Missouri Saving for Tuition) Scholarship Program


Southeast offers up to 25 MOST Scholarships per academic year. The value of the scholarship is $500 ($250 per semester). This is a non-renewable award; to be eligible you must be an accepted incoming freshman or transfer student, or a currently enrolled student in good academic standing with the University; have a completed MOST Scholarship application on file with Student Financial Services by April 1 each year; student's family must have participated in the MOST 529 College Savings Plan on behalf of the student for a minimum of 5 years prior to applying for the scholarship; have full-time enrollment (12 or more credit hours per semester); complete and submit the FAFSA by April 1 for the upcoming academic year; demonstrate high need.

MOST awards are not available for summer enrollment. Applicants will be selected according to their financial need. Southeast Missouri State University reserves the right to make changes to the MOST Scholarship Program as deemed necessary by the University.
