Real World Experience U.S. News and World Report U.S. News and World Report recognized Southeast in the top tier of the 2006 “America’s Best Colleges.” Diverse Student Body A diverse student body with a record 8.7 percent African Americans, is a feature of Southeast in 2005 - up from just 4 percent a decade ago. Full-Time Faculty Full-time faculty – not teaching assistants – teach the vast majority of courses, beginning with the freshman year. More than 90 percent of Southeast faculty have doctoral degrees from such prestigious institutions as Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Dartmouth – to name a few. Business Majors in the Top 25 Percent The top 25 percent – that’s where Southeast business majors score on the national Major Field Achievement Test in Business. Medical School Admissions Medical School admissions for Southeast pre-med students typically average 85 percent - nearly double the national average. Student Transitions Initiative Student Transitions Initiative takes students from orientation to career planning to hands-on learning opportunities to job placement or graduate school. This is administered through a coordinated, integrated delivery of services and support designed to help students make successful transitions into college, majors and career paths, and into the world of professional and community life. The White House Conference on Education The White House Conference on Education chose Southeast’s president as a delegate - one of only 33 nationwide - an honor which no other Missouri institution president has received. "Least-Indebted" Students and a national "Best Buy" “Least-Indebted” students and a national “Best Buy” are characteristics of Southeast as recognized by U.S. News and World Report. University Studies Curriculum Our University Studies curriculum, which is nationally known, promotes active learning beginning with the freshman year and is one of only 17 selected nationally for the “Strong Foundations in General Education” project. College of Education - One of 20 Model Programs in the Nation One of 20 Model Programs in the Nation, Southeast’s College of Education, is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and is featured by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU). The college received the “Best Practice Award for Global and International Teacher Education” for the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE). The college also is a member of the prestigious Renaissance Group of Institutions and the Coalition of Universities and Businesses for Education (CUBE). National Accreditations National Accreditations require academic programs to meet rigorous standards. Southeast holds an impressive list of elite national and international program accreditations, including accreditations in mass communication, business, engineering physics, music, social work, nursing, chemistry. Princeton Review Princeton Review has listed the Donald L. Harrison College of Business among the top business programs in the nation for the past two years. The College is accredited by AACSB International – an honor held by only 15 percent of institutions offering business degrees worldwide. Kaplan's Guide Kaplan's Guide (2003 Edition) named Southeast a “Hidden Treasure,” one of only 30 institutions nationwide. Mass Communication Program Accredited -- One of Just 20 Insitutions Nationwide One of just 20 institutions nationwide, Southeast has achieved accreditation from the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) in all five professional mass communication programs: advertising, journalism, public relations, radio and video production. The only other accredited Missouri institution is the University of Missouri-Columbia. Study Abroad Opportunities are Expansive Study Abroad opportunities are expansive with historic agreements with two Chinese universities, Sichuan Normal and Hunan Normal Universities, allowing students to study in China. Students also have the opportunity to study in Mexico, London, Wales, Germany and across the globe. Nationally Recognized Department of Foreign Languages The Department of Foreign Languages is recognized by the Foreign Language Association as one of the nation’s 35 model programs for foreign language education. The Southern Growth Policies Board The Southern Growth Policies Board, a nonpartisan public policy think tank, recognized Southeast for creating a new School of Polytechnic Studies, now housed in the state-of-the-art Otto and Della Seabaugh Polytechnic Building. The $9 million facility boasts the latest technology and equipment and a Technology Resource Center with statewide recognition. Historic Preservation Historic Preservation is one of only four such U.S. programs that offer a baccalaureate degree. The program includes a field school and nationwide internship opportunities. The U.S. Marshals Service The U.S. Marshals Service partners with Southeast, one of only 37 institutions nationwide to provide real-world experience to criminal justice students. Graduates are hired by the agency upon completion of the paid internship program. Recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence Southeast is the only institution nationwide to be named a two-time recipient of the Christa McAuliffe Award for Excellence in education and in science and math. The Southeast Missouri University Foundation The Southeast Missouri University Foundation just completed its first $50 million capital campaign. The 2005 Regional Innovator Award for Missouri The 2005 Regional Innovator Award for Missouri was presented to Southeast by the Southern Growth Policies Board. Only 14 award recipients were selected from among more than 200 nominations. Southeast was recognized for its Missouri regional campuses in Kennett, Malden, Sikeston and Perryville as an exemplary initiative in rural development. Southeast's New River Campus Southeast's new River Campus will sit on the banks of the Misissippi River and provide a dynamic setting for the home of the School of Visual and Performing Arts. When the new campus opens in 2007, Southeast will become Missouri’s only institution with a campus dedicated to the disciplines of art, dance, music and theatre. |
