The Center for Writing Excellence is holding a cover design contest for the 2014 issue of Helix: A Journal of Interdisciplinary Research. All undergraduate and graduate students may submit one entry. Helix is a journal of researched writing by undergraduate and graduate students of all subjects here at Southeast and is distributed to Southeast faculty and students. In addition to having their design used, the winner will receive a prize of $75.
The winner will be expected to make any alterations the editor feels is necessary for the printer.
The design submitted should be inspired by the title Helix (as in the double-helix of a DNA strand) and may be drawn, painted, photographed, or graphically manipulated as long as it is submitted as an electronic image in CMYK. It may be black and white or full color. While we encourage creativity and will consider all covers submitted, please keep in mind this is a journal for researched writing. Below are our previous covers. Do not feel constrained to maintain the same design as before. We are open to all ideas.
The journal is 8.5” x 5.5” and the cover designs may be front cover only or front and back; please remember to plan for an undetermined spine width if doing front and back. There needs to be a total of a half inch bleed for the printer, making the total dimensions of the image submitted to be 8.625” x 5.75” for a front cover only (note: the left side does not get the .125” bleed because that will end up on the back cover), and 8.75” x 11.25” (not including the spine) for full cover. Since spine width will not be determined until the journal has been complied, the winner may be expected to make alterations as necessary to accommodate the spine.
The cover design does not have to include text; however, the final cover will, so if you choose not to include the text take into consideration where those elements may go. If you include the text, the front cover should have the full title of the journal (Helix: A Journal of Interdisciplinary Research), the volume number (12), and the year (2014) in a reasonable font (outlandish fonts do not fit a more academic journal). If we like your design, but not the font, we reserve the right to request you to change it. You may optionally include Southeast Missouri State University as well. If doing a front and back cover design, the back must also have one of the official SEMO dome logos, even if it is already named on the front. Those can be found for download here. If it does not, know that we will add it to the final cover regardless of any design on the back.
If any part of the submission was not created by the student (this includes images that have been manipulated), the student should be able to show that the original image is copyright free.
Please download the submission form and send it along with your submission to firstname.lastname@example.org by January 20, 2014. Inquiries can be made to Shana Scott (email@example.com) at the Center for Writing Excellence.
