The Department of Child and Family Studies operates three service learning centers/programs. The Horizon's Enrichment Center (for developmentally disabled young adults), the A.P.P.L.E. Project (for senior adults), and Educare (parent education).
These centers/programs not only provide valuable services to the community but also provide students with valuable hands-on service learning opportunities. As a student in the Department of Child and Family Studies, you will be offered real-world experiences through these centers. In addition, you will complete an internship with an agency of your choosing within the community. These experiences will help you apply the course material, gain experience working with different populations, and help build your resume.
As an Administrative Agent for the Missouri Department of Mental Health (DMH), Community Counseling Center (CCC) is entrusted to provide a full array of comprehensive behavioral health services within five southeastern Missouri counties of Bollinger, Cape Girardeau, Madison, Perry, and Ste. Genevieve. The Center is funded by the Missouri Department of Mental Health, Cape Girardeau, Perry and Ste. Genevieve County Mental Health Boards, fees for services, grants, contracts, private and corporate gifts.
The Gibson Center works to bring every individual a new chance for a better life and provides services to all people without regard to race, color, national origin, age, sex, or handicap. The Gibson Center is a non-profit corporation formed for the purpose of creating and operating needed substance use services. It operates under the statutes and regulations of the State of Missouri which governs organizations of this type.
The Safe House for Women is a not-for-profit, private 501(c)(3) domestic violence agency that provides safe shelter, 24-hour crisis hot line services, intensive case management, counseling, court advocacy, referral services, and education programs. The Safe House was established in 1991, providing safe shelter and a crisis hot line as a source of immediate help for victims of domestic violence and abuse.
Along the banks of the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, is home to Life Care Center of Cape Girardeau, a skilled nursing and short-term rehabilitation center recently built in February 2014. Located two miles from SoutheastHEALTH, Southeast Medical Plaza and Saint Francis Medical Center, our facility is a perfect choice.

The A.P.P.L.E. Project is a comprehensive paperwork service which supports the independence of senior adults by providing persons age 60 and older with counseling, advocacy, education, and direct assistance with their paperwork needs.
Educare provides resources, on-site technical assistance, and training opportunities to child care providers with an emphasis on family home providers caring for children who receive subsidy child care.
The University School for Young Children maintains an academic center for the training and education of students in early childhood education, child development and psychology for professional careers and to conduct a nationally accredited early childhood education center open to the university and to the community.
