At Southeast, we know some of the most valuable learning can take place outside the classroom. That’s why here, we work to provide you with labs and centers to put your knowledge into practice. So whether it’s working at our real press or our historic preservation field school or in the state or nation’s capitols, you’ll have the facilities to help you succeed.
The Speakers' Lab provides oral presentation consultation, preparation, and practice for Southeast students, faculty, and staff. The lab features video recording and playback equipment (for speech rehearsal) and a meeting place for tutors (in the Speaking Across the Curriculum program) to work with students and for consultants to work with clients.
The Center for Communication Studies is located in Academic Hall, Room 208 and provides concierge services for majors, minors, and those interested in Communication Studies programs or services.
The Law Enforcement Academy at Southeast Missouri State University is dedicated to meeting the training needs of all law enforcement officers and agencies in the University service area. The Academy, a Missouri Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) approved provider, has provided basic and specialized training for more than 2,800 law enforcement officers since the Academy was established in 1987. Their graduates have gone on to work for agencies at all levels of law enforcement including local, county, state and Federal, including the FBI, DEA, ATF and the U.S. Marshal's Service.
The Center for Faulkner Studies is devoted to the study of William Faulkner, sole owner and proprietor of Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. The Center sponsors and supports educational, scholarly, and public service projects related to William Faulkner, the South, and American and world literatures. In cooperation with BioKyowa, Inc., the Center operates the BioKyowa Visiting Japanese Scholar program.
Southeast Missouri State University Press, founded in 2001, serves both as a first-rate publisher in our underpublished region and as a working literary laboratory for students interested in learning the skills of independent-press publishing. Students in the Small-Press Publishing Program are involved in all facets of publishing activities from acquisitions to marketing and from editing to author management. Annually, the press produces two to four full-length books, an issue of "Journey," the student literary magazine, and two issues of "Big Muddy: Journal of the Mississippi River Valley," an international literary journal. The Press also invites nationally known writers to speak on campus and sponsors Wordsfair in the spring.
The Center for Regional History and Cultural Heritage serves the University and the region through its work in documenting, preserving, and presenting various aspects of local and regional history; architectural trends; archaeology; ethnic and folk traditions. Members of the Center staff provide assistance to museums, historical societies, schools and a number of city, county, state and national agencies.
