The Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) has awarded a grant of $5,000 to the Southeast Missouri University Foundation – Center for Regional History in support of the project titled “Historic Preservation Month Programming for Missouri Main Streets.” The MHC is the only statewide agency in Missouri devoted exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1971.
Southeast Missouri State University’s Bollinger Center for Regional History will lead the initiative, engaging students in the historic preservation program through hands-on collaborations with local heritage organizations. During the next two years, the Center will partner with Old Town Cape, Uptown Jackson, and Missouri Main Street to highlight the stories of historic buildings, people, and places throughout Cape Girardeau, Jackson, and other communities across Missouri.

The first phase of the project will focus on Cape Girardeau, with plans to expand to Jackson and additional Main Street communities statewide. In addition to these efforts, the Center may produce year-round educational materials to support ongoing public engagement with preservation and regional heritage.
