Southeast Missouri State University is encouraging students to take advantage of summer coursework opportunities designed to help them stay on track for graduation, balance academic workloads, and make the most of available financial aid, including federal Pell Grant funding.
“Summer coursework can be a strategic way for students to stay on pace or even get ahead in their academic plans,” said Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success Dr. Stephen Schultheis. “When combined with financial aid options, it provides an opportunity for students to make steady progress toward graduation in a way that fits their schedules and financial needs.”
Summer enrollment at SEMO allows students to take advantage of flexible course options and financial aid programs that can help reduce the overall cost of a college education. Eligible students may use remaining Federal Pell Grant funds during the summer term through the Year-Round Pell program, which allows students to receive up to 150% of their scheduled annual Pell Grant award within a single academic year.
In addition to Pell Grant eligibility, students may qualify for other forms of summer financial aid based on their FAFSA information and remaining aid eligibility for the academic year. Summer aid is typically awarded based on enrollment and financial need, and students are encouraged to review their individual aid status through SEMO’s Student Financial Services office.
Combined with summer enrollment options, this structure supports students seeking to accelerate degree completion or reduce course loads during the fall and spring semesters.
Summer classes can also help students complete prerequisites, repeat courses or explore electives without increasing semester workload during the traditional academic year. They’re also a valuable option for students returning to the region for the summer or those looking to get an early start on their college coursework before the fall semester begins.
Students are encouraged to work with their academic advisor to identify courses that align with their degree plan and graduation timeline.
