River Campus Celebrates Five Years With Kick-Off Open Houseby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Sept. 6, 2011 – The Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts (HSVPA) celebrates its fifth season and welcomes members of the community with an afternoon of free entertainment for the entire family during a Kick-Off Open House scheduled for 1-4 p.m. Sept. 17 at the River Campus.
“We wish to extend a warm welcome and introduce members of the regional community to this beautiful campus and all it has to offer,” said Rhonda Weller Stilson, interim director of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts.
Faculty, staff and students of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts will repeat performances in various venues throughout the afternoon, allowing audience members to participate in multiple events, dropping in as their times permits. Tours also will be given.
The Department of Theatre and Dance will present new student showcase excerpts from plays in the Wendy Kurka Rust Flexible Theatre, stage combat exercises on the lawn and a variety show in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall. The University Players will provide face painting, and pieces choreographed by guest artists and dance faculty will be presented in the dance studio.
Light jazz will be played by members of the Department of Music in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall, and a cello group and steel band also will entertain. The Southeast Missouri Music Academy also will give children the opportunity to try their hand at playing various instruments.
The Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Museum will exhibit “The Floating World: Ukiyo-e Prints from the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art.” The museum also will host activities for children.
Tours will be given of the art studios in the Cultural Arts Center and of the River Campus Dance Studio. Backstage tours will be given of the costume and scene shops.
KRCU and Admissions will be present, and the River Campus Box Office will be open for the public to purchase tickets and be added to mailing lists. Southeast Bookstore also will be selling merchandise. Drawings for tickets, KRCU goody bags, art, and more will be offered as well.
