Greek Blood Drive Feb. 26-29 in University Centerby News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Feb. 22, 2012 -- Southeast Missouri State University’s Greek community has teamed up with the American Red Cross to host a four-day blood drive Feb. 26-29 at the University Center.
The goal of this year’s drive is 600 pints of blood. To fulfill this goal and to meet the needs of the hospitals in southeast Missouri, 780 appointments need to be filled.
Although giving blood may be an intimidating idea for some, 97 percent of people will need donated blood at some point in their lives. Forty percent of the population at any one time is eligible to donate but only five percent of them do so. The need is constant, and help is needed to fulfill this goal.
Donating blood can take up to an hour, so those wishing to donate are encouraged to make an appointment online at www.redcrossblood.org and searching for the Greek Week blood drive.
Blood drive hours are 2-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26; noon-7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27; 11 a.m.- 8 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 28-29.
To prepare to donate:
• Eat a good solid meal with lots of protein
• Drink water the day before to hydrate
• Don’t drink tea for a few days before donating (it keeps your body from absorbing iron)
• Eat foods rich in iron
