The English Department provides many opportunities for students to become involved in learning, research, and publications. In addition to several scholarships, the department also offers a strong internship program for pre-professional experiential learning. Graduate students benefit from the experiential learning opportunities as teaching assistants or tutors in Southeast’s Writing Lab. The department also hosts a chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the international English honor society. Finally, the department also provides opportunities in the Center for Faulkner studies (which includes one of the world’s leading collections of Faulkner-related material), and in Southeast Missouri State University Press, and several other publications.
At Southeast, we strive to provide our students with real-world experience connected with their chosen major and desired career. We believe that this prepares you for the world awaiting you after college.
If you are preparing to become a teacher of English at the secondary or middle school level, you will have the opportunity to student teach in various school settings in the area. This will give you valuable practical experience in the classroom.
If you see yourself in a publishing, editing, or writing career in the future, Southeast’s Department of English offers you numerous opportunities to practice and sharpen your skills before heading out into “the real world.” Here are some publications produced by the Department and the University for which you might be interested in working, writing and/or editing:
