Southeast Celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 11-19by News Bureau on
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., Oct. 31, 2011 -- Students at Southeast Missouri State University and members of the Southeast community will join millions of people around the world to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week Nov. 11-19.
“There is a growing movement of entrepreneurial people generating new ideas and seeking better ways of doing things in all sectors of our economy and society,” said Dr. James Stapleton, executive director of Southeast’s Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and associate professor of management.
“Global Entrepreneurship Week is an initiative that inspires people to embrace innovation, imagination and creativity – to think big; to turn their ideas into reality; to make their mark,” he said. “We have structured events that will engage participants in various dimensions of entrepreneurship, including segments on entrepreneurship for women; entrepreneurship in the arts; a spotlight on local entrepreneurship; an opening keynote by Karla Bakersmith, a Southeast alumma and president of Scrubs and Beyond; and a keynote address by Clifton Taulbert, Pulitzer Prize nominee and author of the recently released book ‘Who Owns the Ice House?’”
Global Entrepreneurship Week, now in its fourth year at Southeast, will connect young people everywhere through local, national and global activities to help them explore their potential as self-starters and innovators and to develop an entrepreneurial mindset and culture.
Students, educators, entrepreneurs, business leaders, employees and many others will participate in a range of activities, from large-scale competitions and events to intimate networking gatherings, according to Sandra Cabot, assistant director of outreach for the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and coordinator for the program.
“We think we have an exciting variety of speakers and activities to celebrate Global Entrepreneurship Week. Two of our newest activities, the Big Idea Contest and the Fault-Line Film Festival, have been building up all semester with qualifying events and skill-building workshops for students,” Cabot said. “All of the events are open to the public, and two of our keynote speakers, Karla Bakersmith and Clifton Taulbert, were chosen to be part of the University’s Speaker Series.”
Global Entrepreneurship Week at Southeast is directed by the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and sponsors include the Donald L. Harrison College of Business, the College of Liberal Arts, Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts, and the Office of the President. Support is provided by the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, KFVS-12, Redhawk's Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization and the Fault-Line Film Festival Committee.
Women Inspiring eNtrepreneurship Workshop
The celebration begins with the Women Inspiring eNtrepreneurship (WIN!) on Friday, Nov. 11, and Saturday, Nov. 12, in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall, home of the Donald L. Harrison College of Business at Southeast.
On Friday, Nov. 11, a pre-conference networking/cocktail reception will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. The WIN! Workshop including displays by local businesses, presentations from other successful women entrepreneurs, and many resources for new and experienced entrepreneurs will take place on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Women who have new venture ideas and would like to start a business, women who currently own a business, women who are leading business careers, or any women who want to be inspired to lead more entrepreneurial lives are invited to experience the WIN! Conference. Women business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs travel from across the region for this workshop to network, share ideas and learn from inspiring women who are making their mark as entrepreneurs.

Keynote Address and Kickoff Ceremony
Karla Bakersmith, entrepreneurial CEO and president of Scrubs & Beyond, will present the keynote address at the Global Entrepreneurship Week kickoff ceremony at noon on Monday, Nov. 14, in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall. Bakersmith’s address is titled “Bringing Fashion to the Healthcare Market.”
Bakersmith graduated from Southeast in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree with an emphasis in marketing and a minor in textile studies. She is the founder of Scrubs & Beyond, a medical apparel company that incorporates a chain of retail stores, a catalog division and an Internet business. Known for its fashion forward scrubs, outstanding customer service and whimsical designs, Scrubs & Beyond was launched to give medical professionals a fun and inviting place to shop for uniforms. The company recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary with 28 stores in 14 states.
Before launching Scrubs & Beyond, Bakersmith was the vice president of merchandising and marketing for Angelica Corporation and previously served as a buyer for the May Company.
Bakersmith’s presentation is also part of the 2011-2012 University Speaker Series and is free and open to the public.
Who Owns the Ice House? – Clifton Taulbert
Keynote speaker Clifton Taulbert will present a story of inspiration and entrepreneurship at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 15, in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall. Taulbert is a Pulitzer Prize nominee and co-author of the recently released book, “Who Owns the Ice House?,” the critically acclaimed publication that served as the basis for a youth entrepreneurship program developed by the Kauffman Foundation.
“Who Owns the Ice House?” is based on Taulbert’s own life experience and chronicles his journey from life in the Mississippi Delta at the height of legal segregation to being recognized by TIME magazine as “one of our nation’s most outstanding emerging entrepreneurs.” Drawing on the wisdom he gained from his Uncle Cleve, “Who Owns the Ice House?” is a powerful and compelling story that captures the essence of an entrepreneurial mindset and the life-changing opportunities it can provide. In this book, Taulbert has teamed up with entrepreneurial thought leader Gary Schoeniger to capture the entrepreneurial life lessons that can empower anyone to succeed.
Taulbert’s book “The Last Train North,” was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and is scheduled to become Taulbert’s next major film. He is also the author of “Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored” and “Eight Habits of the Heart.”
As an author and lecturer, Taulbert has addressed members of the Supreme Court, federal agencies, executives of Fortune 500 companies and CNN. Taulbert has also served as guest professor at Harvard University and the U.S. Air Force Academy and has lectured at a NATO gathering in Brussels, Belgium.
Taulbert’s keynote presentation on November 15 is also part of the 2011-2012 University Speaker Series and is free and open to the public.
Fault-Line Film Festival Awards
The Fault-Line Film Festival will showcase the creativity and innovation of students in filmmaking during several featured events at Southeast Missouri State University.
During the festival, student filmmakers and actors at Southeast are given the chance to spotlight their creative talents by competing for prizes and recognition. Winning films in the Southeast competition will be screened, and $4,000 in prizes will be awarded. This year, for the first time, other Missouri colleges and universities were invited to participate in the Fault-Line Film Festival Invitational in an intercollegiate competition.
“Last year’s festival was a great success. The films were creative and really highlighted the incredible talent we have at Southeast,” said Rhonda Weller-Stilson, associate dean of the Earl and Margie Holland School of Visual and Performing Arts and director of the River Campus.
The Fault-Line Film Festival will include a variety of activities including a special screening of the film “Pieces of Talent” and a question-and-answer segment with the director scheduled for 7 p.m. Nov. 7 in the Forrest H. Rose Theatre.
Emmy Award-nominated cinematographer Steven Poster, who has worked on such films as “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Donnie Darko,” will speak at noon Nov. 16 in the Donald C. Bedell Performance Hall at the River Campus. Poster is president of the International Cinematographers Guild.
Winning Southeast entries will be announced and screened at the Fault-Line Film Festival Gala at 7 p.m. Nov. 16 in the Forrest H. Rose Theatre. A People’s Choice Award also will be presented at this red carpet reception. Refreshments will be available and door prizes awarded.
A film screening for the “Best of Festival” and winning entries from the Fault-Line Film Festival Invitational will take place at 7 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Forrest H. Rose Theatre.
All currently enrolled Southeast undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to participate in the University competition, and students from regional colleges and universities are invited to submit entries through their professors to participate in the Invitational competition.

Pathways to Entrepreneurship
Two local entrepreneurs will share their success stories at a panel discussion at noon on Wednesday, Nov. 16, in Glenn Auditorium of Robert A. Dempster Hall. Local entrepreneurs Glenn Campbell and Chris Buehrle will share their stories of the triumphs and challenges on the path to success. Moderating the panel will be Kathy Sweeney from KFVS-12 in Cape Girardeau.
Campbell and his business partner, Scott Molander, started their business in 1995. They had both served as successful athletic retail store managers and, after identifying baseball-style caps as an undervalued niche in mall retail, decided to open Hat World, Inc. at a shopping mall in Lafayette, Ind. They sold more than 6,000 hats during the 1995 holiday season and opened five more stores in their first full year. After growing to 157 stores in five years, Hat World, Inc. acquired its largest competitor, LIDS, and grew to more than 400 stores.
Buehrle founded NARS, a call center service, in 1993. He is widely regarded as a visionary in the area of call center operations. Under Buehrle’s guidance, the company methodically entered into many new areas of call center servicing. Today, more than 3,500 employees work at NARS call centers in Missouri, the Caribbean and Central America.
Entrepreneurship in the Arts
On Thursday, Nov. 17, at 6 p.m. in Kent Library, participants in the week’s events will again turn their attention to entrepreneurship in the arts. Southeast alumnus Billy Dodson, adventure photographer and owner of Savannah Images, will give a presentation about his experiences as a naval officer, artist and entrepreneur. An exhibition including several images from his recent travels in Africa will be on display in Kent Library through Dec. 5.
Dodson first became interested in photography while on a mountain-climbing trip to Tanzania in 2001. His work has been published in Outdoor Photographer, Nature’s Best Photography, Asian Photography and Virginia Wildlife magazines, as well as in posters and calendars around the world.
The BIG Idea Competition
The BIG Idea Competition is sponsored by the Douglas C. Greene Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Southeast students who have great for-profit or non-profit ideas and are looking to capitalize on them.
Earlier in the semester, students were encouraged to submit their BIG Ideas by answering five strategic questions. Based on the answers to those questions, up to two student finalists from each college or school will be selected to compete in a live “elevator pitch” contest on Nov. 15 in conjunction with Global Entrepreneurship Week. In front of a panel of judges drawn from across campus, the finalists will have three minutes to convince the audience their idea is the next BIG Idea.
Global Entrepreneurship Week was created by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation in the United States and the Make Your Mark campaign in the United Kingdom in 2008. Students in 120 countries will participate in the 2011 Global Entrepreneurship Week events.
