About the First-Year Seminar

A key component of Southeast’s nationally known general education program, University Studies, is the required first-year seminar, UI100. Many postsecondary institutions require a first-year seminar, but ours is different! It is these things and more:

  • An introduction to the University Studies Program.
  • A training course in how we want you to find information, think critically about what you found, and report those findings both orally and in writing.
  • An open forum on what it means to be educated and being a responsible citizen.
  • A place to seek assistance on declaring majors and finding career information.
  • Advice on how to be successful in your college career.

All this, and much more, is presented via a theme chosen and developed by the instructor. You pick the theme that most interests you. In class you will acquire more information about that topic, and discuss pertinent issues with classmates and an instructor who share your interest while you practice skills that will help you in your major and in your career. There are no other first-year seminars like UI100!

Let us know how we can assist you.

Themes for Fall 2009 Semester – Check out the kinds of topics students chose from for the Fall 2002 semester. There were more than 40 to choose from! You can anticipate many of these being repeated (but improved!) in future semesters. Everything from mass media and the movies to the Holocaust to environmental issues and more!

First-Year Seminar (FYS) vs. First-Year Experience (FYE)

What does that mean?

The first part of the above formula stands for First-Year Seminar. At Southeast our first-year seminar is UI100, and you can read about it on other pages within this website. The second part of the formula stands for First-Year Experience, and they’re not the same thing. Truth is, FYS is a part, admittedly a big part, of students’ overall first-year experience, but the FYE is must more than the seminar. It includes students’ experiences in other first-year courses, students’ introductions to majors and minors, career explorations, adjusting to a new schedule and lifestyle, managing time and finances, and other such adjustments required of being a college student. UI100 serves as an introduction to our general education program, University Studies. One of its primary purposes is to inform students about the kinds of activities they will engage in during their years at the University. As such, UI100 is a considerable component of students’ overall first-year experience.
