Southeast Missouri State University

The Horizons center is designed to encourage independence and community interaction for individuals with special needs who are currently cared for at home or in an assisted living situation. The program provides supportive programming each day by teaching basic life skill lessons, offering a variety of services and providing the opportunity for them to access community facilities and events.  We are a medical model program with a full time nurse on staff during scheduled program hours. We are the only adult day program for the developmentally and mentally disabled adult in the Cape Girardeau, Mo. area.

Horizons Enrichment Center is sponsored by the College of Health and Human Services through the Department of Human Environmental Studies at Southeast Missouri State University. Our program is licensed by the Department of Health and Senior Services and certified by the Department of Mental Health.

The Horizons Enrichment Center has a three-fold purpose:

  1. To help meet the needs of developmentally disabled adults who are 21 years of age or older (18 in special circumstances), who are currently living at home or in assisted living situations in or near Cape Girardeau, Mo. We will offer appropriate supervision, exercise and recreation, life skill activities, social interaction, transportation, and community involvement in a safe, warm and caring atmosphere.

  2. This program will allow parents, guardians, caregivers and other family members respite from the full-time responsibilities of care giving. This day program will allow families the opportunity to become more integrated into the community and to live a more fulfilling life.

  3. To benefit the community by providing training opportunities to Southeast Missouri State University students from a variety of disciplines, providing employment, encouraging families with disabled family members to locate in the community, and promoting community growth and spirit.
