MINUTES OF ACADEMIC COUNCILApproved as corrected 10/6/98
- Holt (presiding), Anderson, Buis, Cron, Dahiya, Gifford, Hinkle, Jones, Kellerman, Lipetzky, McDougall, McGowan, Nahikian-Nelms, Pittman, Scates, and Shaw.
- The minutes of May 5, 1998, were amended to indicate that Dahiya, Pittman, and Nahikian-Nelms were present. McGowan moved and Jones seconded approval of minutes as amended. The motion passed unanimously.
- Change in Residency Requirement for Associate Degrees: Shaw explained that the current residency requirement of 30 credit hours for all degrees does not adequately support the needs of students transferring in to complete two-year associate degrees. In July 1998, Trish Kogge, who was Registrar at that time, reported that the majority of four-year colleges require only 20 resident credit hours. It is proposed to change the residency requirement for associate degrees to 20 credit hours. McGowan moved and Buis seconded approval. The motion passed unanimously.
Course and Program Approval Procedures: Holt distributed drafts of two documents, setting out revised course and program approval procedures. The new procedures will incorporate use of the campus intranet and changes in CBHE approval procedures. Holt pointed out that the new procedures assume that college and school offices will be prepared to prepare and post proposals as HTML documents. Jones suggested that a step be added to the program approval procedures to give chairpersons the opportunity to sign off on any courses in their departments which are required in the new program. It was also suggested that proposed programs be posted on the campus intranet for general review at least thirty days prior to coming to Academic Council. Holt invited members of the Council to submit other suggestions for revisions to him prior to the next meeting of the Council in October, at which time the revised procedures will be considered for formal approval.
