Arts & Culture Who says you have to go to New York to see a Broadway play, Picasso’s art or listen to a symphony? The newly constructed River Campus, on the banks of the Mississippi River, is the Midwest’s first public institution with a campus dedicated to the disciplines of art, dance, music and theatre. The River Campus provides state-of- the-art facilities, which include a 950-seat professional theatre. In addition to theatre, you can listen to symphonies, operas and jazz bands. If you prefer to participate instead of sit in the audience, you can audition for the theatre group’s next performance, participate in the nationally recognized Golden Eagles Marching Band, sing in the choir or play the violin in the University’s symphony. At Southeast, we want you to experience the arts and culture from today and through the ages. We’ve made this easier with the introduction of the Rosemary Berkel and Harry L. Crisp II Southeast Missouri Regional Museum at the River Campus where you can see contemporary and traditional artwork and exhibits. We have prehistoric Native American artifacts that date back to 900 A.D. and contemporary art from famous artists such as Picasso. Also, at the end of each year, Southeast’s Art Department holds the annual juried senior art exhibition focusing on the works of our graduating artists. As if theatre and art aren’t enough, you can see a professional musical performance at the Show Me Center. The Show Me Center hosts big-name musicians every year right here on campus. Check out their schedule to see who is playing this year. The community of Cape Girardeau has a myriad of arts and entertainment, including first-Friday art gallery openings, arts and craft fairs, community theatre events at Port Cape and music in the park. Local arts and community events can be found on the Southeast Missourian newspaper calendar.
