Cape Girardeau is one of the oldest modern communities west of the Mississippi.
Founded by French fur traders in 1733, Cape Girardeau has been continuously inhabited for almost 300 years. Located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, Cape Girardeau has a rich heritage associated with legendary Missouri author Mark Twain, the Trail of Tears, the Civil War and the Lewis and Clark Expeditions. Currently, Cape Girardeau has more than 120 restaurants to satisfy any appetite; more than 85 retailers, including those in Westpark Mall, to fulfill any shopper’s desires; and, two major movie theatres to accommodate any movie critic. In addition, Cape Girardeau hosts the annual City of Roses Music Festival, arts and crafts festivals, jazz festivals and much more!
